On Wednesday, December 9, 2020, the GLCD team held our first Remote Dissemination Seminar with 19 attendees. The seminar’s purpose was to introduce the project as a two-year effort to develop resources that will incorporate gender issues into curricula and form a network of faculty members across the U.S. who are passionate about this issue. This is the first of several “dissemination seminars” offered between Fall 2020 and Summer 2022.
Attendees joined from multiple institutions for the agenda shared below. The seminar was led by Dr. Manuel Piña, PI (TAMU).
- Welcome and Introductions
- Ice Breaker Activity
- Status Reports: Team building, project advisory team, module development, and external evaluation.
- Breakout Sessions
- Session 1 – Challenges instructors may face and how to overcome them?
- Session 2 – Options for incorporating modules into prevailing courses?
- Session 3 – Improvement of male participation in this effort?
- Breakout Session Reports
- Wrap Up and Next Steps
After an innovative ice breaker facilitated by Dr. Hannah Russell and status reports, attendees chose or were randomly placed into one of three fast-paced, moderated breakout sessions to provide feedback that will be included into the curricula. Each moderator shared a brief report of major findings from their group.
Takeaways from breakout sessions included:
- Challenges and Recommendations:
- A need to understand the context of these topics and provide curricula recipients with tools to accomplish a gender-lensed approach.
- Guide instructors in how to establish and maintain a safe learning space and make learning participatory, addressing teaching methods and impacts of personal bias.
- Guide development professionals’ interactions with women in other cultures.
- Incorporating Modules:
- It’s important that the content is practical and applicable so that students retain it, so be sure to connect content to previous experiences.
- Similar works and details about the project were shared in this session.
- Improving Male Participation:
- Include examples from males with successful real-world experiences (to share how they were successful) and those without success to share why things didn’t work.
- Include seminars, workshops, and panels with male and female perspectives but without a negative connotation.
- Create a safe classroom and learning environment.
Finally, attendees were invited to complete a quick survey if they were interested in engaging with the project further.
Dissemination Seminar II is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 10 at 11:00 am CST. To receive an email invitation to the seminar, subscribe to our listserv by emailing “GLCD subscribe” to audraw@tamu.edu.
